Geslaagd psychodrama waarin vier mensen geblokkeerd raken in een lift. Naarmate de uren verstrijken stijgt de spanning en ontstaan er allerlei conflicten tussen de vier, die allemaal wel iets voor elkaar te verbergen hebben. Omwille van de locatie vaak beschouwd als plagiaat van DE LIFT, maar dat is onjuist. Schenkel toont zich een uitstekend observator en sterk stilist. Hij biedt meer dan alleen maar een technisch knappe thriller. In die zin is ABWÄRTS duidelijk de meerdere van DE LIFT. De Nederlandse leading lady Soutendijk gooit hoge ogen in haar eerste grote buitenlandse rol. Het scenario is van regisseur Schenkel. Het camerawerk is van Jacques Steyn. Ook bekend als OUT OF ORDER.
